YouTube launched the "You Choose Spotlight 2008" which features a presidential candidate each week. It's a wonderful opportunity for candidates to reach a massive audience using a whole new medium. But can they take advantage? Every week I'll be breaking down each candidate's spotlight video based on five points: Message, Video Background, Participation, Dress and Editing. This week I'll be taking a look at Sen. John Edwards (D). If you have any ideas for other categories please leave them in the comments!
1. Message: Edwards completely misses the mark. I find this surprising considering how well his campaign is using social networks to connect with voters. This is his chance to tell us what he would do to change the country. I liked that he asked what people would do to being about change but Edwards is running for president. I want to hear what he wants to do, just like this video responder.
2. Video Background: Boring! Where is he? It looks like he's across from an apartment building of some kind.
3. Participation: He encourages people to post video responses but says, "I'll try to watch them." Wrong. Say you will watch them. Honestly, all totaled the responses aren't more than a half hour. Heck, he could even have an campaign aide watch them and pick one for Edwards to respond to. The Senator posting a video response to another YouTube member would be a pretty big deal.
Kudos to the campaign though for allowing comments, both video and text, that are critical of him and his positions. Heck, even this guy, a former campaign volunteer who alludes to being high posted a response.
4. Dress: Why so formal? Please, and this goes out to all the candidates, lose the tie. This isn't Larry King.
5. Editing: Why the fade edits? Why can't Edwards speak directly to the YouTube community? The more unfiltered you appear the better the video comes across.
Overall Grade: 4/10 - Edwards missed a big opportunity. He should definately make the extra effort in his next video. Again, I'd recommend making an informal response video to one of his video responders.
